Why contribute?

Help build a more complete, up-to-date map of cell networks.

Contribute to the OpenCellID project

Every observation helps

OpenCellID grows through measurements shared by its community. Your observations can add missing cells, improve location estimates and keep the dataset useful as networks change.

Cell location data helps developers and researchers:

  • Estimate a device's location when GPS is unavailable.
  • Explore mobile network coverage.
  • Build location services for connected devices and asset tracking.

You can contribute with an Android phone or submit measurements from your own devices and datasets.

Collect with Tower Collector

Tower Collector is a free, open-source Android app that records cell observations and uploads them to OpenCellID. Its source code is available under the Mozilla Public License 2.0.

  1. Install Tower Collector from Google Play.
  2. Get an OpenCellID API key and configure it in the app for OpenCellID uploads.
  3. Record measurements as you travel, then upload them to OpenCellID.

For app instructions and troubleshooting, see Tower Collector's FAQ.

Already collecting cell observations through an app, tracking device or network? Use our measurement API and file uploads to contribute them.

We also welcome reliable cell location datasets from network operators, researchers and other contributors. Contact us with a description of your data so we can discuss how to include it. Only submit data you have permission to share under the OpenCellID data license.
